Origins
In 1987 a group was born. The founders weren't visionaries nor were they especially conscious of the future implications of the movement they were initiating. They were just plain concerned and... click here for more about the history of Asana.

The first ever Earth Day was held yesterday, Sunday April 22, 2007 at the Roca Verde Hotel Restaurant and Bar.The event was organized and executed by the folks at Asana. By anyone's reckoning it was a resounding success. Earth Day in Dominical Costa Rica

The day was blessed with partially cloudy skies and the energy was way high. The focus was on Planet Earth. Being here in Costa Rica causes one to stop and appreciate the planet that we live on. So to be at a celebration of the Earth here has a special feel that is contagious and seemed to permeate all the activities and displays as well as all in attendance.

There was a tremendous turnout of expats, Ticos, and visitors. The booths were all about planting things and going green and organic. I’m not sure what the deal was with the music, but it was awesome. I don’t remember having enjoyed music so much in a long time. There was one group there called “Um” or something like that that had some of those Australian bamboo instruments called didgeridoo, or some such thing. The tone was like a Himalayan monk’s chant squared, no, make that cubed. It was this low growl kinda sound that reached into the marrow of your bones and caused the spine to tingle.

There were Brazilian dancers doing the Capoeira fight/dance accompanied by drummers that seemed to send out electricity into the audience with the throbbing cadence of five drummers acting as one and raising and lowering the tempo as the fighter/dancers moved in synch.

Outside and all around the Roca Verde grounds were booths selling seedlings of native trees and plants. Some amazing orchids in bloom starting at about $10.00. I'd imagine that they would be quite a bit more elsewhere, but whatever, the funds went to good causes and it felt good to be there.

Jack Ewing of Hacienda Baru was there with a booth, Brian Nice with his amazing bird photographs, and just a slew of local wares and interests.

It has been speculated that if the Earth were to be attacked by another planet in a scenario something like, say, the movie "Independence Day ", that it would be the thing that would unify this fragmented planet. Give humanity a common objective that crossed boundaries, language, and religion. If survival is the issue, it could actually overcome these divisive influences. Well, maybe as we move into this time of trying to figure out how to preserve life on planet Earth there will be a unifying effect as humankind puts its collective head together to try and figure the problem out. In a small way, this sort of unity and commonality was seen at the first Earth Day in Dominical Costa Rica.
