I stopped in to do a bit of recycling at the recycling center located between Dominical & Uvita, just off the highway at the Puerto Nuevo turn off. If you are heading south on the highway you'll see this gravel road exit from the highway to the left, just past the Cuna Del Angel entrance. While I was there I had a chance to talk with Heriberto, the proprietor of the establishment.
Heriberto came up with the idea that recycling might be a way that he could make some additional money just using his favorable position in The Zone, almost perfectly situated between Dominical and Uvita, and just right off of the highway. He mentioned to me the amount that he makes for each kilo of plastic and each kilo of aluminum, and it ain't much. I didn't write them down but it was something like 50 colones for a kilo of plastic or roughly .10 cents.
Then he indicated to me a package of garden sized trash bags that he has to buy for 1,500 colones, or roughly $3.00 and said that these eat up all his profits. Now, I got to wondering, "why on earth does he do it?" The answer is, I don't know, but he does, and I'm glad that he does because it gives me a place to throw my plastics and aluminum out without feeling like I'm ruining the earth.
Heriberto mentioned that the other challenge to his recycling project is the amount of un-recyclable trash that he receives and has to get rid of. So I asked him what all he could and couldn't take. If you're wondering the same, here you go:
