Dominical Social Programs Association

Dominical's center for:

The Dominical Social Programs Association is in the heart of town and headed up by the energetic Zeidy Jimenez Tabash. The scope of the programs is extremely diverse while the spirit is focused.
After talking with Zeidy, I would summarize the motivation behind this organization as: "To serve the needs of the community, at its core, in non-lucrative ways."

Sea Turtle Nursery
The most recent program has been one of protecting the various forms of sea turtles that nest on Dominical Beach. Zeidy has used the proceeds from a well supported recent fund raising event to construct a secured enclosure on the beach. It measures 7 x 7 meters and is an actual nursery for the turtle eggs that are deposited in the sand of Dominical beach every night. Volunteers comb the beach throughout each night, watching for the turtles. As soon as the eggs are deposited, they volunteers dig up the eggs, and put them inside the protective walls of the nursery where the eggs will be allowed to hatch and the hatchlings can then find their way to the ocean. Anyone that would like to volunteer for this beautiful experience of a walking vigil of sea turtles and having a hand in protecting their eggs from poachers, please use the e-mail link on this page and let them know of your interest. Or feel free to call as well.
Recycling
Twice monthly a truck passes through the town gathering up the recylcable goods from the local businesses. At anytime, businesses and individuals can bring their plastics, aluminum, glass, and paper to Social Programs (behind Tortilla Flats) where the materials are seperated and prepared for recycling. The proceeds from the recycling program go toward funding the Ecological Education for children. There is also a bi-monthly beach clean-up, provided by Social Programs.
Re-Forestation
Some of the funding raised by Social Programs goes toward local reforestation efforts. The organizers have a finger on the pulse of the types of trees, and where the need is greatest for re-forestation efforts. Only native trees are planted and there is an emphasis on native fruit trees.
Ecology Education
Field trips are planned to various parts of the country so that the children can learn about the natural gifts that their amazing country has to offer. The children learn about turtles and how to protect them. They study native wildlife and what can be done to preserve and manage the remaining rain forests.
